When used appropriately, essential oils have a long history of helping, not harming you and your family. Like everything else, understanding the safety guidelines and warnings is vital in avoiding any adverse effects or reactions. Essential oils can be a safe alternative to harmful, chemical-filled products we often find in our homes.

Before using any essential oil, it’s crucial to understand that not all oils are created equal. Be Young Total Health has an EOBBDD rating on every oil we sell. EOBBD stands for Essential Oil Botanically and Biochemically Defined. This rigorous quality standard includes tracing each oil lot (geographical origin), botanical description, organoleptic characteristics, extraction mode, and full physical and chemical analyses. EOBBD is accomplished through several tests that classify and identify every compound present within the essential oil. Be mindful and choose high-quality essential oils that have been tested and cleared for safe use before using them with your family.

Other safety information to remember:

Keep out of reach of children and supervise children when in use.

Children’s skin is more sensitive, and adults should test it on the bottom of their feet before applying to their skin. Because the skin is more delicate, you can dilute the oils before applying them topically. And always make sure to store oils out of reach of children to avoid accidental ingestion.

Read the labels.

Pay attention to any warnings or recommendations on the label, even if you have used an individual oil before.

Dilute oils for first-time use or skin sensitivity

It’s important to dilute oils when using on children, using them for the first time, or if you have sensitive skin. See dilution recommendations for ratios.

Avoid sensitive areas.

Avoid putting oil in your eyes, broken skin, nose, inner ears, and other sensitive areas.

Be aware of sun sensitivity.

Some oils can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun, including Lemon, wild orange, grapefruit, bergamot, cumin, lime, and any blend that contains these oils. Before applying oils topically, check the label for sun sensitivity warnings.

Talk to your doctor.

If you have any questions or concerns, it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before using any essential oil.

Stay away from an open flame.

Essential oils are flammable and should never be used near an open flame.

Do not add directly to your bathwater.

Before adding to a bath, essential oils need to be fully dispersed in an appropriate base.
