The first pharmacists were animals. Since the beginning of time, animals have had an innate sense of plants’ healing and protective properties. They self-medicate by deliberately seeking out botanicals that prevent or cure discomfort or increase their survival and reproduction. A perfect example is the Starling. These birds deliberately seek out specific aromatic plants and include these botanicals in their nests to protect their fragile young. The essential oils in the leaves and grasses stimulate the chicks’ immune systems and protect against bacteria.

Whether your best friend barks, purrs, or chirps, they can benefit from the power aromatic botanicals found within essential oils.

Essential oils have been shown to present very low risk and have few adverse side effects when used correctly. They are a great alternative to over the counter treatments. That being said, there are different application methods for caring for your pets with essential oils. Today we’re discussing diffusion.

Using a diffuser to spread the aromatic molecules of essential oils throughout the air is a safe and easy way to expose essential oils to your pet. There are two main types of diffusers. One is preferred for pets; the other is not preferred.

Atomizing – Not Preferred

Animals, unlike humans, have a much higher and sophisticated sense of smell. Because essential oil particles are more concentrated when using atomizing diffusers, they tend to be irritating to animals’ sensitive systems.

Ultra-Sonic / Vapor – Preferred

Less concentrated than atomized oils, the mist of water and essential oil produced by an ultra-sonic diffuser is a safe choice for introducing your pet to the benefits of aromatherapy. It’s also great for making your entire home smell fresh and clean.

Here is a list of our favorite oils to diffuse with our furry friends:

  • Chamomile- Calms the body and mind during times of nervousness, panic, restlessness, excitement, or hyperactivity.
  • Ginger- Promotes easy breathing, calms inflammation.
  • Clary Sage- Helps with hyperactivity.

Remember to keep the diffuser out of reach from your pets and have in a well-ventilated space and allows for your pet to leave if they don’t end up liking the smell.

In the event of an allergic reaction, discontinue use of the products and see a veterinarian immediately for a health assessment and appropriate remedial action. To prevent side effects, consult with a medical professional before use.
